I’m a creative person at heart and take great pleasure in coming up with ideas and helping them grow into something real and valuable. My preferred medium is digital and I’m one of the internet’s biggest fans.
My background in PR means that I’m comfiest helping companies communicate and engage more effectively with people. By spotting the real potential of the web back when Facebook was all just fields, I’ve managed to stuff heaps of social media experience up my sleeve. But, I still find it hard to explain my job to my parents and my bank manager thinks I do something to do with iPods.
As a freelancer I’ve been helping companies in lots of different ways, though on the whole my work tends to fall into three main areas:
Thinking
I love this part of my job and I sort of wish I could do it all the time. Agencies or companies themselves often just need some ideas, inspiration and recommendations. What should our overall social meda strategy be? What should we do to achieve what we need to? How can we better at doing this? How could we make our website better by using social media? We’ve built this but we don’t know how to tell people about it … that kind of thing. Often they’re in a real hurry and haven’t got any time to hold brainstorms or craft nice-looking presentations themselves, or just want some fresh thinking from someone not as close to the problem as they are. My ideas have helped win lots of new business and a few have led to nominations and awards, which is always nice.
Doing
Sometimes people come to me with their own ideas and want me to help make them a reality, or they just need a bit of fine tuning to help give them a much better chance of flying. Other times people want me to come up with brand new ideas and make them happen. I’m happy doing either and the ‘doing’ part of my job helps prevent me from becoming one of those people that spends their life crafting beautiful presentations but has next to no idea how stuff works in the real world.
Examples of the sorts of things that I do include; establishing an optimised, integrated social media presence for a brand; engaging with carefully chosen key influencers to start a conversation and help lay the foundations of a community; seeding new things using a tactical plan of activity covering off owned, earned and paid-for media and targeting key influencers identified through detailed online and social media audience mapping.
Training
The web is a pretty complex thing really and the growing number of social tools and technologies at hand can often be a little overwhelming. I help people get their heads around everything and understand the real impact social media is having on them and which bits they should focus on. How do I we develop an effective social media strategy? How do we use Twitter and Facebook much more effectively? How do I find and engage with key influencers? How do we measure the impact of social media activity to demonstrate our return on investment? What are the key trends on the horizon for digital and social media? These are all questions that I’ve helped answer for the people I work with.
